Tips on finding the right wedding photographer
Who is right for you?
Finding the right wedding photographer is one of the most essential parts of planning your wedding if you’re after those beautiful and timeless photos.
After choosing your venue, most brides and grooms to be, then choose the photographer. During the summer months the venue and photographer can get booked up quite quickly, therefore it’s important to note that leaving this decision could cost you hiring the photographer that you wanted.
But who is right for you?
First, lets talk about budget…..
There are many photographers out there that will suit all budgets. Those that are training and building a portfolio can give you some great deals and those with years and years of experience with the top end equipment can give you the confidence in giving you what you have always dreamed of but at a price.
Set out a budget for your wedding expenses, wether your on a budget/small wedding or the full white wedding with a large guest list, you should always have an amount allocated to your photographer. Unless of course you don’t want a photographer. If this is the case, buy throw away cameras for guests and collect them at the end of the wedding, you will be surprised what images you will get at the end, lots of fun and something different.
If you do want beautiful images, were the couples are posed well with good lighting, edited well and want the confidence to know your going to get images that are professional then don’t skimp on your photographer. Professional is the key word, I don’t have a photography degree but I do take beautiful images and have done for years. My experience over the years has gained me the right to call myself a professional.
I have some tips that may help you in your quest for the right photographer…
Check out their previous work. Do they have a portfolio large enough to show that they have experience? Is their style right for you?
It’s extremely important to look at their portfolio, most professional photographers will fall into their own style, wether it be basic, stylish and classic, artistic or contemporary. Do you like their style? Is this how you want your images to look?
Are they within your budget?
Will your budget allow you to have what you want? Every photographer prices differently, some charge separately for the images on a USB, some charge separately for albums and some charge for full packages with both USB and an album. Always get the prices of everything before booking with no hidden costs.
Do they have a selection of sample albums for you to view?
If you’re after an album, I would advise for you to view their sample albums. This will give you an indication on how your album would look if you decided to have one. Don’t just admire the images but admire on how the album is designed. Is it the contemporary design you like or the traditional design? Some photographers still provide albums with no or little design, which isn’t the way it should be. Do they provide a good selection of sizes? Do you want a small, compact album or something large that makes a statement?
Do they ask for a deposit?
Yes, the professionals will ask for a deposit, this is to secure your date. It’s a way of showing commitment with your photographer. The longer you leave it to pay your deposit, the more chance you have in losing your date.
Ask how long it takes to receive your images
Usually I give a timescale of 6-8 weeks from the wedding date to the customer receiving their images. If it’s wedding season (May-September) some photographers may increase the timescale. The photographer should keep in contact with you on updates on how long they will be. It’s exciting to see your images and they don’t want you to wait any longer than they need to.
Are they easily contactable?
Most companies these days have social media accounts and this is the same for photographers. Make sure they reply to any questions you have within a reasonable time, this will give you an indication on their customer service. Do they also have an email address to contact them and a telephone number? You will want to know you can contact them when needed.
How many images should you receive?
This all depends on how long you have the photographer with you. Most professionals will not give you all the images, this is very important from a professional point of view. There will be images that you will not be shown, for example, blurry, over exposed and images that are not suitable to be released. Even the most expensive photographers out there will capture blurry or unsuitable images. Photographers also take out multiples of the same image, therefore you may see the photographer on the day clicking away but you will receive the best and only the best images. On average I supply well over 300 images for a full days wedding, quite often its over 600.
Will your images be edited?
All images should be edited, in most cases the photographer will pick out a small selection of these edited images and edit them to an even higher standard. This is especially the case if you have decided on an album. Ask the photographer if your images will be edited, this is very important as an image that comes straight out of a camera can be totally transformed with even a little editing.
Finally, have fun in your search. Your wedding day will be a day to remember and having a photographer there will give you the opportunity to look back in years to come on how wonderful your day actually was.
